Android Apps Coming to Windows
Android Apps Coming to Windows
Microsoft has historically been one of the big names at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and 2012's has been no exception. It'll be the last year that the tech giant is here, though, as it's announced that it will be holding its own events Apple style from now on. So, what was on the agenda for Microsoft?
Kinect (and lots of it)
Tim Stevens' live blog for Engadget showed how Kinect took center stage. Not only were more partners announced for Kinect's voice guide, but a "two way" television show was shown off, called Sesame Street TV. A child demonstrating the game interacted with the on screen Muppets.
Perhaps more importantly, Microsoft announced that the Kinect accessory would be coming to Windows PCs, starting on February 1. Kinect for Windows hardware will be available for $249.
Windows 8
Windows 8's "Metro" interface, reminiscent of Windows Phone 7's, was demonstrated at CES. Long Zheng of iStartedSomething posted screenshots which show popular tablet games and apps available for it, including Cut the Rope and Evernote.
These games and apps will be coming to Windows sooner than Windows 8 is, however, as the Windows Store Microsoft's answer to the App Store will be opening in late February. Many of these titles are already available for Windows, but will receive automatic updates through the store and will be easier to find there.
The Windows Store is just part of Microsoft's push to make Windows PCs more like iPad style tablets. Windows 8's touch interface will replace the traditional desktop for tablet PCs, and is designed to be easier to use. Some Windows 8 PCs will include the old style desktop, though, and be compatible with earlier apps.

While not part of Microsoft's demos, a company called BlueStacks demoed its App Player, a program which is able to run Android apps inside Windows. The apps will integrate with Windows 8's Metro interface, taking up tiles on its surface instead of Android style app icons.

Are You Spreading Yourself Too Thin
Do you have a limit, some event that takes place, which tells you that you are overextending yourself? With the busy, crazy lives many of us lead these days; it is no surprise that many of us are spread way too thin. We try to cover every base, take care of everyone, meet every deadline, make every meeting and appointment, and more, more, more!
Spreading yourself too thin can catch up with you mentally, physically, and socially.
Pushing your brain beyond your limits can mentally affect not just your work but everything else. When you have reached a limit your mind knows to stop, to take a break. You can begin to have trouble focusing. You may not be as alert. You may not be as responsive. You simply may not think clearly.
Pushing your body beyond its limits can affect your entire life. Your body can only take so much before it can take action to preserve itself. Your immune system can weaken when your body is run down and you are not getting enough rest or sleep. You can become weak. You can become overly fatigued. Other health issues you already have may be affected as well.
Pushing yourself to "do it all" with both mind and body can affect your relationships. When dealing with any of the above you can become unresponsive or distant to those around you. You can become socially inverted. You can make those friends and family, who care about you, miss you. This can put strain on any relationship type.
Do you know what your limits are? Do you know when to call it quits and take a break? Do you know when it is time to rejuvenate yourself?
Many people do not. I am guilty of this, but I do not think it is a matter of knowing my limits; it is more a matter of accepting them and then taking action to accommodate them.
Take a break, take a long weekend, or take a vacation. Do what you can to revitalize your mind, your body and your relationships. In the long run, you will be better for it. More from Sandy

How to Use Android Market
Apps ManiaThere has been an explosion in the demand for applications (or apps) for mobile phones in recent months. The meteoric rise of the iPhone and the Apple App Store has proven that people want to be able to access all sorts of functionality and entertainment on their smartphones. Google's Android platform is growing into a serious contender with a range of excellent Android smartphones and a huge choice of apps and games.
Google's answer to the Apple App Store is the Android Market. This is where you'll find thousands and thousands of the best Android apps and the best Android games.
Android Market on your Mobile Phone The vast majority of Android phones ship with the Android Market already installed, so if you access your programs screen you should see a program called Android Market. It is often just labelled Market and has an icon of a shopping bag like the one pictured.
Clicking on the icon will launch the Android Market on your phone and allow you to browse the available apps and games. When it first loads up you'll see three tabs along the top.
Apps this is where you'll find a wide variety of applications. Games this is where you'll find all sorts of Android games. Downloads this is where you can review what you have already downloaded for your phone and see if there are any updates available.
Searching and Browsing in Android Market You should also see a search option which is usually represented by a small magnifying glass icon. Click on this to type in a specific search term such as "alarm clock", and you'll get a list of alarm clock apps.
In order to browse for apps or games, select the relevant option. You'll find yourself faced with a range of categories. You can select a specific category or you can choose All. You'll now find a list of the Top Paid and the Top Free apps or games. You'll also find a Just in section, highlighting new releases.
There is a problem with this method. The apps and games in the top lists are obviously shown to far more people and attract more downloads, which creates a loop boosting their popularity ever higher. Since there are well over 100,000 apps and games in the Android Market, this means there are some great options tucked away and some not so great options in pride of place. It pays to have a good rummage around and see what you can turn up.
App and Game Info For every app or game listed in the Android Market you'll find a rating out of 5 stars and information on the price. If you select a specific app or game you'll reach a screen which provides further details on what the app or game does (usually with example screenshots of it in action). This screen will also contain user comments which give some idea of how the app has been received.
The Install or Buy option at the top right allows you to download and install the app or game, but before it does so there is a security screen which gives you a complete list of the functions that the app will be able to access on your phone. For example, it will tell you if the app or game can access the network or GPS capabilities of your phone. If you are suspicious of anything listed there, or you feel it will be too taxing on your system resources, then you can choose not to download the app. Assuming you do choose to proceed, the app or game will download and install automatically and you can start using it.

Problems Finding Good Apps and Games in Android Market The main problem with finding useful apps or great games in the Android Market is the fact that they are listed pretty haphazardly and it can be difficult to find good quality downloads. There are an awful lot of poor apps and games which don't work with every version of Android or every Android phone and yet lack any sort of warning that's the case (in theory the Android Market should only display apps or games that are supported by your phone).
The 5 star rating system is not the most reliable and it is worth checking how many ratings actually make up the listed score (you can see this information just below the description on the information page for each app or game). If there have only been three ratings then the overall score is far less valuable than if there have been over 100 ratings.
User comments are also a mixed blessing. Sometimes people post nicely detailed wee reviews or mention useful specifics about the phone they tested on, sometimes they just post abuse. If the app doesn't work at all for one person then they're liable to mark it low and post a negative comment, however, that doesn't mean it won't work for you and it could turn out to be an app you love. In the stock market, there have been companies that have made others disappear nearly as fast by either a revolutionizing product or a superior business idea. Other companies simply go away because their business model no longer fits in today's world. In this article, I discuss a couple of trends I feel are leading to a similar vanishing act among some popular companies.
There was a time when GameStop made sense. That time was far before its IPO in 2002 where it saw its stock soar eclipsing $63/share at the end of 2007. The Babbage's, FuncoLand's, and Electronic Boutique's of the 1980s and 1990s evolved to form what is today the world's largest multichannel video game retailer that sells new and used video game hardware, physical and digital video game software, and accessories for both consoles and PCs. However, since 2007 the stock has fallen over 60% and I believe it will likely fall much lower in the future until it is game over for GameStop.
For the 3rd quarter of 2012, net sales decreased by 8.9% or $174 million, and this was primarily attributable to a decrease in comparable store sales of 8.3%. New video game hardware sales played a huge part as it decreased 33.4% or $92.8 million. Mad Money's Jim Cramer stated in midJanuary that used games declined about 15% during the holiday season, and because used games represent about 30% of all revenues, this led to Jim Cramer's downgraded opinion of the stock. I disagree with this logic. Who even buys used games for Christmas presents? More importantly, if you look at GameStop's latest earnings report breakdown by segment, it is new video game software, not used, that carries the largest load towards net sales for the company at over 43%.
So why is GameStop on its way to disappearing? First, streaming video games and downloadable games are crushing their business model. Less games in their physical medium form (cartridges, CDs, etc.) means no trading and no buying actual games in their traditional form. If you factor that combined, new and used video game software products make up 70% of their sales, then you can see how this hurts GameStop tremendously. If you add the growing interest in mobile games like those in the App Store for iPhone where 7 of the top 10 grossing apps are now games, then you can see where gaming customers are now spending their time and money. Unfortunately no one has created an invincible operating system and Symantec will keep making a ton of money. However, Corning may have created the invincible screen to put screen and product protector companies like Zagg out of business.
Corning introduced its highstrength alkalialuminosilicate thin sheet glass, Gorilla Glass, in 2007 for the first iPhones. Since that time, the global manufacturer of glass and ceramics has updated the Gorilla Glass to be nearly indestructible. The latest version called Gorilla Glass 3 may be the beginning of the end for Zagg and their screen protector business model. Gorilla Glass 3 has durability enhancements known as "native damage resistance" all the way down to the atomic level. With a glass that is basically 40% more scratch resistant, the potential 1 billion user's mobile screens that currently feature earlier versions of the very durable Gorilla Glass, could be upgraded to Gorilla Glass 3 in the coming years.
Corning's recent earnings show that net sales declined, driven by lower sales in the Display Technologies, Telecommunications, and Environmental Technologies segments, were offset by higher sales in the Specialty Materials segment. Gorilla Glass is part of the Specialty Materials segment and demand has been increasing at a steady pace with a net income change of 55% for the 3rd quarter of 2012 versus the same period in 2011.
Where Corning has seen a modest increase in share price the last 6 months of over 7%, Zagg has fallen over 36% in the same time frame. Although Zagg's lineup of 5,900 precision, precut invisibleSHIELD designs among many other skins and protectors have helped Zagg increase net sales 59% for the first 9 months of 2012 versus 2011, I see growth opportunities limited and it looks like investors do too. Currently, the invisibleSHIELD product line accounts for approximately 48% of Zagg's revenues. This could take a big hit as Gorilla Glass 3 arrives. Gross profit margins are already declining for Zagg as they seek future growth in sales of their noninvisibleSHIELD product lines. Quarterly profit margins for the past 5 years have averaged 9.56%. However, Zagg has only beaten this average once the past 6 quarters.
Lastly, the other intangibles don't help the Zagg story. They face competition by the growing presence of copycats and cheaper alternatives on auction sites like eBay. Rapidly changing technology used to be a positive for Zagg since more devices means more screen protectors. However, changing technology may start to be a negative as customers find less need to protect their soontobe obsoleteinonemonth devices and would rather save the extra money towards the latest and greatest. What is the point in putting a screen protector on a smart phone when you will replace that same phone in less than 2 years?
The third step in magic, The Prestige, is often the hardest part of creating a great magic trick. Would David Copperfield's vanishing of the Statue of Liberty be as great if he didn't make it reappear? No. So the question is how can management of both GameStop and Zagg make the third act a success and bring back the greatness that both stocks had in the past? GameStop may have to team up with a big online subscription presence in order to stay relevant with today's gaming trends. They might have to completely change the business model entirely. Zagg's proprietary invisibleSHIELD film was originally used to protect military helicopter blades from highspeed damage. As I look at the front of my car and see all the nicks and pits of damage from road debris, rocks, and gravel, I start to wonder. Maybe Zagg's product doesn't have to apply primarily to electronic devices?

In the stock market, there have been companies that have made others disappear nearly as fast by either a revolutionizing product or a superior business idea. Other companies simply go away because their business model no longer fits in today's world. In this article, I discuss a couple of trends I feel are leading to a similar vanishing act among some popular companies.
There was a time when GameStop made sense. That time was far before its IPO in 2002 where it saw its stock soar eclipsing $63/share at the end of 2007. The Babbage's, FuncoLand's, and Electronic Boutique's of the 1980s and 1990s evolved to form what is today the world's largest multichannel video game retailer that sells new and used video game hardware, physical and digital video game software, and accessories for both consoles and PCs. However, since 2007 the stock has fallen over 60% and I believe it will likely fall much lower in the future until it is game over for GameStop.
For the 3rd quarter of 2012, net sales decreased by 8.9% or $174 million, and this was primarily attributable to a decrease in comparable store sales of 8.3%. New video game hardware sales played a huge part as it decreased 33.4% or $92.8 million. Mad Money's Jim Cramer stated in midJanuary that used games declined about 15% during the holiday season, and because used games represent about 30% of all revenues, this led to Jim Cramer's downgraded opinion of the stock. I disagree with this logic. Who even buys used games for Christmas presents? More importantly, if you look at GameStop's latest earnings report breakdown by segment, it is new video game software, not used, that carries the largest load towards net sales for the company at over 43%.
So why is GameStop on its way to disappearing? First, streaming video games and downloadable games are crushing their business model. Less games in their physical medium form (cartridges, CDs, etc.) means no trading and no buying actual games in their traditional form. If you factor that combined, new and used video game software products make up 70% of their sales, then you can see how this hurts GameStop tremendously. If you add the growing interest in mobile games like those in the App Store for iPhone where 7 of the top 10 grossing apps are now games, then you can see where gaming customers are now spending their time and money.
