Play the Card Game
Can't get enough of Star Trek? You might want to check out the Star Trek Rivals collectable card game. The Star Trek Into Darkness companion game is a nice mix of simplicity and addictive game play, and because it uses a free to play model, you can check it out without opening your digital wallet.
The game is simple: 5 random cards are dealt out to players, who in turn, play the cards on a 3x3 grid similar to a game of tic tac toe. Each card has values on each side, and if you you place a card next to another card, you can capture it if your card's adjacent value is higher than the opponent's card. Where it gets tricky is how this can cascade into multiple captures.
You can play multiple matches at the same time, each side alternating turns similar to games like Words With Friends. And what would a card collecting game be without collecting cards? You start out with a meager stack of cards and can purchase new cards either by purchasing a 'deck', which only gives a chance of getting a good card, or buying a specific card. The one confusing part of the game is the use of multiple currencies (there are three), each that can be used to buy something different. You gain currency as you win games, or (of course), if you open up that digital wallet.
But unlike Dungeon Hunter 4 and similar freemium games that force you into paying money, you can enjoy Star Trek Rivals without spending any extra cash.
