2006 Spiel des Jahres Nominees Announced

2006 Spiel des Jahres Nominees Announced

The nominees for the 2006 Spiel des Jahres, Germany's award for Family Game of the Year (and probably the most prestigious award a game can win) have been announced. The list includes:

Aqua Romana, for 2 to 4 players, designed by Martin Schlegel (published by Queen Games)

Sonderpreis ("special prize") Fantastisches ("fantastic art treasure") Spiel: Shadows over Camelot, for 3 to 7 players, designed by Serge Laget and Bruno Cathala (published by Days Of Wonder)

Sonderpreis Komplexes ("complex") Spiel: Caylus, for 2 to 5 players, designed by William Attia (published by Rio Grande Games / Ystari)

Shadows Over Camelot and Caylus were the 1 and 2 games on my list of the best board games published in 2005.

Of the designers nominated for the main award, Knizia has by far the longest resume. Hundreds of Knizia designed titles have been published, including recent games like Ingenious, Pickomino, Beowulf: The Legend and the Euphrates Tigris Card Game.

In addition to the five nominees, the jury announced nine "recommended" games, including Hey! That's My Fish!, Mesopotamia, and Roma.

Recent SdJ winners include Niagara (2005), Ticket to Ride (2004) and Alhmabra (2003). Here are my picks for the best of all the Spiel des Jahres winners and more great award winning games.
